ALBANY — A Sparta man has won the Top Master Trophy following the National Pool Checkers Tournament that was conducted in Albany.

Albany Pool Checkers Club President Henry Mathis presented the award to Alfred “East Point” Burnett after the four-day tournament, conducted under the leadership of Clarence Gooche, concluded. Wayne Lockheart, national tournament director of the American Pool Checker Association, was present for the tournament.

The 49th national tournament featured competitions across multiple skill classes, including Top Master, Master, Junior Master, Gold Bar and Blue Ribbon.

Pool checkers is a variant of traditional checkers, in which single pieces can jump both forward and backward and a king can jump forward and backward and is not limited to moving just one space.

The tournament was conducted Monday-Thursday at the Merry Acres Inn and Event Center. Lockheart said about 100 competitors were expected to compete.
